“Make an Impact” Product Design Competition 2025
Rules and Guidelines
General Background
“Make an Impact” Product Design Competition is jointly organized by Library and CEIE of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), with an objective to nourish entrepreneurial and innovative skills of students at different levels, as well as to inspire them using STEM skills by designing and prototyping products or digital solutions on the theme specified by CEIE.
Regulations
- Definitions
- “CEIE” refers to Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Education of EdUHK.
- “Event” refers to “Make an Impact” Product Design Competition.
- “Entry” or “Entries” refers to the work(s) and information submitted.
- “EI Leader(s)” refers to EdUHK students participating in this Event.
- “Participating School(s)” refers to primary and secondary schools participating in this Event.
- “School Team(s)” refers to School Teams of the Participating Schools.
- “Supervisor(s)” refers to school teachers who lead the School Teams.
- “Participating Student(s)” refers to student team members of each School Team.
- “Product(s)” refers to the final output(s) of each School Team submitted for this Event which can be in any formats and on any media, e.g. a physical tool, a computer application, a mobile app, etc.
- Eligibility and Details of Event
2.1. This Event is open to:
- a) All full-time and part-time EdUHK students, preferably recommended by academic departments, or students who have previously participated in activities organised by CEIE; and
- b) Students of local primary and secondary schools.
2.2. Quotas:
- a) 40 EdUHK students as EI Leaders.
- b) 40 School Teams in two Divisions: 20 in Primary School Division and 20 in Secondary School Division.
- c) If the number of Participating Schools is larger than the number of EI Leaders, then i) each EI Leader may be at most paired with two Participating Schools, one in each Division, or ii) individual Participating Schools may not be assigned with any EI Leader. All decisions on assignments of EI Leaders to Participating Schools will be made solely by CEIE in consultation with related EI Leaders and Participating Schools.
2.3. Each Participating School may form up to 3 School Teams, each of which comprises 3 to 10 students. A teacher shall be appointed as Supervisor.
2.4. Depending on the number of EI Leaders available, an EI Leader may be assigned to assist the Supervisor and to serve as a liaison between the School Team(s) and CEIE as far as possible. Irrespective of the number of School Teams formed, each Participating School will be assigned no more than one EI Leader.
2.5. EI Leaders will meet and work with their assigned School Teams on a regular basis either in Mong Man Wai Library or venues of individual schools from February to April 2025. CEIE will provide spaces, materials and facilities for prototyping and fabrication in STEM Room, Creative Lab and other Future Classrooms in Mong Man Wai Library. Transportation for School Teams between EdUHK Tai Po Campus and MTR University Station may be provided if needed and resources permit.
2.6. EI Leaders are responsible to assist the Supervisors in leading their School Teams, as well as to train and guide the respective School Teams on how to use materials and facilities for prototyping and fabrication in STEM Room, Creative Lab and other Future Classrooms in Mong Man Wai Library.
2.7. CEIE will provide at most $500 subsidy of production costs to each School Team on a reimbursement basis, in addition to free raw materials for 3D printing and laser cutting at STEM Room in Mong Man Wai Library. Receipts are required for reimbursement arrangement.
- Theme
3.1. The theme of this Event is “To design and produce a product/prototype or digital solution to enhance living of a target group, in alignment with at least one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations”. Target groups include but not limited to elderly, school children, people with physical disabilities, etc.
3.2. Each School Team is required to select a target group and at least one SDG, and design a product prototype or digital solution on the theme, e.g. an apparatus which may strengthen school community environmental protection awareness, a product or a mobile app which may help senior citizens in their daily life, etc.
- Application Procedure
4.1. Interested EdUHK students should submit their applications online via the Event Website at https://ceie.eduhk.hk/make-an-impact-product-design-competition-2025/ on or before Saturday, 30 November 2024. If there are more than 40 EdUHK student applicants, CEIE will select 40 EI Leaders through interviews.
4.2. Local primary and secondary schools are required to submit their applications online via the Event Website at https://ceie.eduhk.hk/make-an-impact-product-design-competition-2025/ on or before Saturday, 30 November 2024, on a first-come-first-served basis.
4.3 By submitting an application to this Event, participating EdUHK students and schools agree to all terms and conditions of the Event, including all Rules and Regulations.
4.4. Each school may submit a maximum of 3 applications for forming at most 3 School Teams.
- Briefing and Training for Interested Schools
5.1. A briefing for interested schools on the details of this Event will be held at EdUHK at 2:00pm to 3:30pm on Thursday, 21 November 2024. Tour of Future Classrooms and EI Hub will be organised on the same day. Interested schools are invited to register to attend the briefing and tour at https://eduhk.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Vd69lkrVj36fVc on or before 14 November 2024. Video recording of the briefing will be uploaded to the Event Website.
5.2. Training on product design will be provided to School Teams in January 2025. Training workshop on pitching will be provided to School Teams in March 2025.
- Roles of EI Leaders
6.1. Depending on the number of Participating Schools, each EI Leader may be randomly assigned to one or two Participating Schools, one in each Division if the latter, by Wednesday, 11 December 2024. In addition, each EI Leader should support no more than 3 School Teams.
6.2. All EI Leaders are required to attend the briefing at EdUHK at 11:30am to 12:30pm on Friday, 13 December 2024.
6.3. Workshops on product design and prototyping, mobile apps development as well as pitching will be provided by CEIE to further equip EI Leaders with fundamental skills in product design.
6.4. EI Leaders are required to:
- assist the Supervisor in leading the School Teams;
- serve as the liaison between the School Teams and CEIE, including reserving the facilities at EdUHK Library;
- attend all related training;
- attend at least three meetings with their School Teams (including the first and the last meeting);
- train and guide the School Teams on how to use prototyping and fabrication facilities provided by EdUHK Library; and
- participate in the Final Pitching.
- Submission of Entries
7.1. Each School Team is required to submit the following to CEIE by Tuesday, 15 April 2025:
- a) A presentation video of no more than 10 minutes to elaborate their ideas and introduce their product or digital solution. It is not compulsory for all team members to speak in the presentation, but each member is required to show up;
- b) A PowerPoint presentation of no more than 15 slides (in either English or Chinese) to introduce their product or digital solution; and
- c) Their final product or photo(s)/screen capture(s) of their final product which should be a functional prototype, software or mobile app.
7.2. Each PowerPoint should include, but not limited to, the following:
- a) The target group and the issue to be addressed;
- b) Selected SDG(s);
- c) Design concept of the product;
- d) How it benefits the target group and resolves the issues;
- e) Method/STEM knowledge used in developing the product; and
- f) Demonstration of the product.
7.3. All items submitted must be original works of each School Team and do not infringe any third party’s rights such as copyrights, patents, trademarks, trade secrets, musical composition or performance rights, video rights, image rights, etc. Plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification.
7.4. All items submitted must fully comply with all laws of Hong Kong, and must not:
- a) contain any illegal, indecent, provocative, defamatory and hate-spreading contents;
- b) promote illegal behavior;
- c) support racial, religious, sexual or other invidious prejudice;
- d) advocate sexual or violent exploitation;
- e) violate rights established by law or agreement;
- f) invade the privacy of any person; or
- g) be otherwise inappropriate as determined by C
7.5. CEIE reserves the right to reject any submission based on absolute sole discretion without assigning any reasons.
7.6. Participating Schools and School Teams shall grant CEIE the right to use their names, photographs and products for publicity and promotional purposes on its website and any publications, at conferences, or at any other venues and social media without notifications and further compensation.
- Adjudication
8.1. The submitted presentation videos will be adjudicated by a Judging Panel comprising EdUHK staff. The top 8 teams of each Division will be invited to do a final pitching to the Judging Panel on Friday, 9 May 2025 at Flexi Zone, 1/F, Mong Man Wai Library, EdUHK. Each School Team will have 10 minutes of presentation without interruption from the judges, followed by a 5-minute Question & Answer session. It is not compulsory for all team members to speak in the presentation, but each member is required to show up in the Final Pitching and participate the whole pitching session for better learning. Absence from the Final Pitching is not allowed unless approved by the Supervisor and CEIE in advance.
8.2. All Participating Schools and School Teams must agree to be bound by the decisions of the Judging Panel. In case of dispute, decision of the Judging Panel shall be final and appeal will not be entertained.
8.3. Judging Panel of the Final Pitching comprises 3 EdUHK staff members.
8.4. Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

9.2. Finalist certificates will be issued to all other School Teams, Student Members and EI Leaders participated in the Final Pitching.
9.3. Participation certificates will be issued to all other School Teams, Student Members and EI Leaders.
9.4. Award Presentation Ceremony tentatively will be held after the Final Pitching on Friday, 9 May 2025.
9.5. If feasible and appropriate, the winning teams and other selected teams may be invited to display and present their products in person to visitors on EdUHK Campus or another downtown venue.
9.6. If feasible and appropriate, intellectual property right of the products may belong to both Participating Schools and the supporting EI Leaders.
- Additional Regulations
10.1. To ensure the fairness of the Competition, EI leaders and School Teams shall bear an obligation of confidentiality. Ideas, design and techniques of the products shall not be disclosed or shared during the Competition. If an EI Leader is assigned to support two separate Participating Schools, he/she must warrant that intellectual concepts and works developed by one school will not be shared or used in the other school, or vice versa.
10.2. CEIE reserves the right to interpret, alter and amend any Regulations and Guidelines of the Event and to issue additional rules and regulations at any time it considers necessary.
10.3. In case of disputes, CEIE shall have the absolute and full right of final decision.
- Indemnity
11.1. All EI Leaders, Participating Schools and School Teams shall indemnify and hold EdUHK, all organizing units and their personnel harmless from any third party claims for loss, damage, prejudice, liability, expense, etc. suffered as a result of any manner in connection with their products, any other of their acts or omissions or any information which they provided.
11.2. EdUHK and all organizing units shall not be liable to any EI Leaders, Participating Schools and School Teams in respect of any failure to win a Prize in the Event or any other losses, damages, costs, expenses, claims, liabilities, injuries, accidents, etc. suffered by EI Leaders, Participating Schools and School Teams arising out of or in connection with the Event.
