“Make an Impact” Product Design Competition 2024

“Make an Impact” Product Design Competition is jointly organized by Library, CEIE, LTTC and SPFEO of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), with an objective to nourish entrepreneurial and innovative skills of students at different levels, as well as to inspire them using STEM skills by designing and prototyping products or digital solutions on the theme “To design and produce a product/prototype or digital solution to enhance living of a target group”.

Features of the Competition
  • Participating EdUHK students will be assigned as “EI Leaders” and form School Teams with students of individual primary or secondary schools
  • Training on product design, mobile apps development, Canva design, 3D printing, pitching, etc. will be offered for EI Leaders
  • Training on product design and pitching will be offered for School Teams
  • ELAT hours will be counted for trainings attended by EI Leaders
  • iWork hourly subsidy will be offered to EI Leaders
  • Both winning School Teams and their EI Leaders will be awarded prizes
  • EI Leaders who are full-time undergraduate students may also enroll in a credit-bearing course, and will be awarded 1 credit point upon completion of the Competition and submission of a 1000-word reflection (Students enrolling in this course must indicate their choice in their applications.  ELAT hours will not be counted if they successfully enroll in the course)
  • School Teams will compete for Champion, First Runner-up, Second Runner-up, 2 Merit awards and Best Performance Award in each Division
  • Winning products may be showcased at exhibition

First Round Adjudication

The submitted entries, i.e. presentation videos, PPT slides and the product (final product or photo(s)/screen capture(s) of the final product), will be adjudicated by a Judging Panel comprising EdUHK staff members.

Submitted entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

Product Design Design and completeness of the product 20%
Value Creation Anticipated impact of the product on the target group 20%
Presentation How well the product is presented in the PowerPoint and in the pitching 10%
Application of STEM skills and knowledge STEM tools and skills used in developing the product 10%
Market potential Market value/potential of the product 10%
Functionality The product is workable and user friendly 10%
Final Pitching

The top 8 teams of each Division will be invited to do a final pitching to a Judging Panel comprising 3 EdUHK staff members on Friday, 10 May 2024 at Flexi Zone, 1/F, Mong Man Wai Library, EdUHK.

Each School Team will have 10 minutes of presentation without interruption from the judges, followed by a 5-minute Question & Answer session.  It is not compulsory for all team members to speak in the presentation, but each member is required to show up in the Final Pitching and participate the whole pitching session for better learning. Absence from the Final Pitching is not allowed unless approved by the Supervisor of the School Team and CEIE in advance.
